I can still clearly recall my initial encounter with the Northern Lights. The encounter felt almost unreal, and it took place in Tromsø, Norway. Nothing could have prepared me for the enchantment of witnessing the auroras dance over the Arctic sky, despite my extensive knowledge of their ethereal radiance. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” Tromsø is among the greatest locations on Earth to witness this magnificent natural phenomena. When to Visit Tromsø for the Northern Lights
When it comes to seeing the Northern Lights, timing is crucial, and Tromsø delivers. The weather was great when I visited in late winter, around January. The aurora’s spectacular presence was made possible by the long evenings, clean skies, and minimal light pollution. In Tromsø, the Northern Lights season lasts from late September to early April, with December through February being the best viewing months. But the darkest skies, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., are the greatest times to see them.
Where to Go for the Best Views
One of Tromsø’s best features is the abundance of amazing spots to watch the Northern Lights, each with its own special experience. To get away from the light pollution, I made the decision to leave the city.
The summit of Mount Storsteinen was one of my favorite locations. The Arctic cold hit me as soon as I got off the cable car after a brief ride to the summit. However, it was worthwhile. As I stood there, I marveled at the swirling patterns of purple, pink, and green in the sky. The setting felt like a dream because of the snow-covered mountains and the fjord below, which made for an incredibly beautiful perspective.
A short drive from Tromsø is Kvaløya Island, which I suggest visiting for a more immersive experience. I rented a car and traveled to a remote location close to the shore by following the winding roads. The crunch of snow beneath the feet was the only sound in the utter silence. I had the impression that the entire world was performing for me as the Northern Lights emerged. The entire scene became even more captivating as the lights reflected off the sea.
Chasing the Lights with a Tour Guide
Tromsø provides guided Northern Lights experiences for those with an adventurous spirit. I joined a small group led by a local guide who was well-versed in the best places to go aurora chasing. The guide’s ability to scan the sky and forecast where the lights would next come was what most impressed me. We were led to isolated locations free from light pollution, where we waited in the dark with hot beverages as the sky gradually changed.
We also learned how to take pictures of the Northern Lights from the guide, which helped us create some priceless memories. Seeing the lights is one thing, but documenting them with a camera gave the experience a more intimate feel.
